And the menu for title titanic collaboration is just as fascinating as the performers, themselves: a return to the Bill Monroe-inspired bluegrass roots of Skaggs' Kentucky heritage, with most of the material penned by Hornsby. To hear Hornsbys brilliant piano added to the Skaggs-led traditional bluegrass lineup of mandolin, guitar, fiddle and banjo Is a revela-tion. Hornsby and Skaggs swap lead and harmony vocals as though they've been doing this all their life on some backwoods porch. If you want irrefutable evidence of the utter joy of these sessions the proof is in the album's final track, a total reinvention of Rick dames' 1981 funk-infused chart smash "Super Freak"—a potent example of musical cross-pollination that would cause a hive full of bees to turn around and buzz back where they came from.
